Many kids diagnosed with FPIES visit a treatment team of doctors and medical professionals, such as Allergists, Gastroenterologists, and/or Dietitians. You may have some questions about what these people will talk about with you and how they can help you. Read below and learn what you might expect at your next appointment!

Meet the Dietitian

Hi! My name is Tara McCarthy and I am a Registered Dietitian, also sometimes called a nutritionist! Right now, I work at Boston Children’s Hospital. I love my job because I get to meet families and talk about healthy safe food! I get to watch children grow strong with good food.

How do I help children?

I help children by helping your family understand which foods are safe for you to eat and how to make sure that you enjoy eating with your family and friends and that mealtime is fun. It is part of my job to make sure that at each visit you continue to grow strong.

How can I help you?

I can answer any questions you have about food, nutrition, and healthy eating. I think it is so important for every child to take part in preparing meals. This may be talking about what foods are your favorite, or being open to trying to new foods, or maybe packing your own lunch or cutting up fruit.

Where will you see me?

You will find me in an office at the hospital. My office has lots of fake foods and cookbooks on the shelves. I have a big round table where we sit and talk and come up with goals.

What can You Expect at Your Appointment?

At your appointment, you will get weighed and measured. This is so we know how you are growing. Next we will talk about all the foods you typically eat and maybe which foods you want to try next or how we can get you to eat more fruits and vegetables.

What can you do if you have any questions?

If you have any questions during your appointment, you should just ask. If you are shy or worried that it is not a good question, you can whisper the question to your caregiver and they can ask. You can also write down your question on a piece of paper and hand it to me. What I want you to know is that all questions are good questions and I am here to help. I usually learn a lot from my patients!

Would you like to learn about some other professionals you might meet?

Meet a school psychologist and a child life specialist, too!
